AliciaDoes Film: Jurassic World: A Fallen Kingdom

I feel like in this review I’m going to completely contradict myself from the Deadpool 2 scenario. I thought it was a well-known fact that most films never have a sequel as good or better than the original. This is not the case with Jurassic World: A Fallen Kingdom.

Now before we get down to the actual review, I want to know what your favourite Jurassic Park/World moment is. For me, it’s the scene where the lawyer runs to the toilet block in Jurassic Park and then the T-Rex just comes and eats him right out of the toilet. Honestly, I laughed. But this isn’t a Jurassic Park review so comment down below your best moment.

Good aspects:

  • Jeff Goldblum/ Dr Ian Malcolm; now I feel like the trailer did kind of ruin his return and maybe they should have kept it more of a secret but they didn’t. Although he does not play an integral role in the film, it’s still nice to have a bit of familiarity to have a recurring character from the original films.
  • Isla Nebular; as a geography student, I love to see a good volcano. The complete immersion of the volcano in the beginning of the film makes for a great experience simply because it adds an element of suspense. You know that at some point the volcano will eventually erupt but the suspense built as added to by the characters being on the island.
  • Claire/Owen Dynamic; the relationship between the two was left as potential romantic in Jurassic World but we find out at the beginning of this one  it didn’t work. However, that didn’t seem to matter to the dynamic as Claire continues with her controlling nature in comparison to Owen’s more reckless and spontaneous character.

Bad aspects:

  • Villains; the main let down of this film is the predictability of Mills (Rafe Spall) into becoming an evil super villain (he is really not). Toby Jones (Wheaton) I always seem to love as a villain and he doesn’t even shine in this movie. Most of the characters you want to take over the villainous wheel don’t. In Jurassic World, Dr Henry Wu (B.D. Wong) was the clear villain simply because of his genetic research but in this, I feel like the overshadow his character with those of less significance. Honestly, this is the main area where this film could improve simply because of the quality of the other character relations.
  • Goldblum’s cameo is way too brief; quite self-explanatory to say the least.

Overall, I would definitely give this film 4 stars because it was so much better than the first. Although it did have a few problems, the new characters and dynamics between them certainly sacrifice this film from what it could have been with the villains provided. The villains definitely underperform but the remaining cast make sure the film isn’t a complete failure. Despite the fact that most films with a bad villain are bad, this one manages to change this with its historical remarks and Isla Nebular antics. I definitely recommend this as a must-see.
